How
to Buy a Violin or Bow
Our hand made instruments
have a 100% trade in allowance (case excluded) less any damage
or maintenance devaluation .
When trading
from a commercial quality instrument purchase the trade
in will be 100% plus a $75 (violin) or $150
(cello) fee for exchange to an equal or greater value
instrument in good condition. Commercial quality
instruments (rental grade) also are devalued by 10% per
year after ownership.
So
you are thinking about buying a violin over the
internet........
Lashof Violins does not
sell hand made instruments via mail order. -
We believe that the proper selection of a hand
made violin or wood bow must be done in person and with
unbiased assistance. Mail order purchases limit you to what someone else
thinks you will want or by what they make the most money
on. We strongly recommend against mail
order violin purchases and as such we do not sell hand
made instruments by mail order.
Unlike some local violin firms, Lashof
Violins never pays teacher commissions for
violin sales. View
Strings Magazine interviews on this subject.
This unethical but common practice most likely violates
antitrust laws and even if disclosed to the student by all
parties involved, puts the violin purchaser at a
disadvantage. Be sure to ask your teacher if such a
financial arrangement is being made so that an impartial
judge may be sought to preview all of your available
choices. If your teacher helps you with the purchase of a
violin, they should be reimbursed for their time just as
you pay them for a lesson. If they tell you to only go to
one local store, they may very well be getting a commission.
There have been many
unethical practices in the violin business and Lashof
Violins dedicates itself to total honesty and integrity.
The following are examples
of instruments that we usually carry - We specialize in
having a variety of instruments to choose from, not
limiting you to just a few modern "shop" brands. Instruments listed are
examples of what we normally sell but may not actually be in stock
due to inventory fluctuations.
Instruments with photos are indicated in blue.

What
is better, Round or Octagonal?
Many players wonder why some bow
sticks are round, and others are octagonal. Some
players have an strong preference for one or the
other, but it’s a good idea to be open to both, as
the world’s finest bows come in both types. From a
bow maker's perspective, all bows start as
octagonal bows. The first step in thinning and
graduating a bow stick takes place when the maker
planes down each of the four edges of the
rectangular bow blank. As the stick gets closer to
its final shape, the bow maker flexes and weighs the
stick. In some cases the weight and stiffness of the
stick require the bow maker to round off the edges of
the octagon to make the stick lighter and more
flexible. In other cases, the weight and stiffness
are good without this step.
On many of the lower priced bows,
it is common for certain models to have a designated
type of stick, round or octagonal. To make this
work, the master of the shop makes certain
assumptions about the wood before the sticks are
made, and the type is decided before the thinning
and graduating begin.
